Today we had another tuesday playday... I was blown away with what I could get done with Gypsy today. She was ready to get started as soon as I went to get her from the paddock...a quick brush- through the seven games - I like to do this as I am brushing her then back her out through the stall gate- bring her back in (yoyo & squeeze me at the same time)-side step her along the stall wall etc and saddled up then by the time I have finished the brushing I have touched her all over with the rope, brush and my hands, Lifted her feet, moved her around (porcupine) and then I drive her while we are walking to wherever we are going. we do circles when we are doing the girthing stages up and down the hilly part of the driveway, then side step her where I can up and down the driveway....seems to work a treat. Puts us both in the same frame.
BUT yesterday I took her out into the 5 acre flats paddock and we did a bit of backing, walking, flexion, circling, backing through the gate and then forward again, circles etc...she was incredible really listening (and so was I)- last week I had no concentration worrying about Dad, and neither did she...just shows how tuned you need to be.
This week we were just so in tune- YOU CAN FEEL IT WHEN YOU ARE!! So I decided we could do some one rein riding in the roundpen. WOW it was amazing, I thought I'd forgotten it all- but NO- I got on and off the wrong side-no issues. did the preflight checks- no issues- set off around the rail throwing the rope over her head to direct her in whichever direction I wanted to go. Her go and Whoa was brilliant- then we did the back up- OMG I was just so thrilled with the slightest forward movement of my feet and a very slight jiggle of the rein she stepped back -straight- and right across the roundpen...we did the squeeze me between the ball and the rail then backed through that gap as well-about 3 feet- rode around the cone and mounting block in figure of 8- both ways no issues. We also rode towards the ball- she put her nose on it and then when I pushed her forward she was rolling it along-WITH ME ON HER BACK- what a difference from last week when she wouldn't even go near it at all.....I felt on top of the world and I thought she deserved a good wash down - so we did that, then fed her and we both went off feeling very very happy. Can't wait to do more now.
